Do the big 2 processor manufacturers have to share major technological advancements with each other?

When INTEL figures out how to change the transistor to achieve 45nm using high-k gate dielectrics are they forced to share this with AMD?I’m curious how the competition survives when another company makes a breakthough into uncharted territory,there must not be many secrets in the tech world or they can buy patents from other companies and impliment there technology for their own uses.

They keep up with each other by:
A: Buying the others products
B: Gathering information from their spies
C: Buying information
D: Researching, Testing and Building their products for
future developements.
