Should I be paid for proofreading?

I am a writer with a Master’s. I often do the proofreading for my fiancĂ©’s company, which is not a family business, but a new technology business listed on the stock exchange. I started proofreading their press releases about 2 years ago. At first I did it as a favour, but now I think I should be paid at least something.

I am a bit tired of companies thinking that writers work for free. I have spoken to my fiancĂ© about this and he told me that when we go out to dinner, that’s my payment. I feel that this is insulting. Would you hire a plumber to fix your sink and not pay him? No. It’s the same for copy editing. Writers work just as hard as everyone else, why won’t magazines or companies pay us? I’m not alone in feeling this way, remember the writer’s strike last year?

So do you think I’ve being stupid about this, or should I be paid for this work?
Sorry, I meant “I’m,” even copy editors make mistakes!

Do a bit of research and find what proofreaders in your area get paid (I’d tell you, but I’ve never proofread for pay). When they ask you to do it, tell them about how many hours it will take, what you’ll charge them by the hour, and then ask to what address you should invoice them.

Make it professional. They can either pay you or pay someone else – who isn’t going to be as familiar with their company. If they have any sense at all, they’ll pay you.

And yes, I agree, it is insulting. I’ve had companies beg and plead for me to write copy for their ad, commercial, whatever – and can it be done in 24 hours? Those same people are the ones I will then have to invoice for 8-9 months until I’m paid. But I digress…

Tell your fiancee that dinner isn’t a payment; it really is an insult. Point out to him that the wage/pay history can be as important as the work you do in your portfolio. Without pay, he is not only devaluing the work you’re doing for his company, but he is devaluing the work you may do in the future.
