Spyware – Understand and address the risks – Part Two
Mitigate risk
The main technologies available to mitigate risks associated with spyware in the business environment are discussed below.
Mitigation techniques or two levels into two parts – the entrance and office level.
Protection Desktop
On the desktop or client should include three technologies available to mitigate the risks posed by the "spies." These are the firewall personal, dedicated anti-spyware programs and traditional desktop anti-virus (AV) tools.
AV
In some ways, forms of spyware are similar to the virus. They identify with precision, can be detected by analyzing the client computer and are sometimes packaged as a set of files that can be removed to clean the infected system. However, many forms of spyware does not reside in the disk as a persistent – as hostile ActiveX and Java applets. The motivations, delivery mechanisms and often, removing spyware, however, is different protocols of viruses and worms.
"Spyware" is also different, since there is no agreed definition of what constitutes "Spyware." Some programs that could be classified as "spyware" – such as Microsoft Windows Update notifications – are useful, revealing its capacity followed, do not alter the impact of office productivity users, and are distributed by companies responsible. Spyware should be classified and identified by its actions and the level of risk – which complicates the detection and removal, that users can of choice about what is permitted.
AV vendors – including Trend Micro, McAfee and Symantec – software that is already very good in the analysis files before that run. The software suite also mature business management and suppliers have support teams in place to address the needs of corporate clients. Without But the AV vendors have been slow in adding anti-spyware capabilities to their products. Sellers, however, AV catches – Trend Micro acquires private InterMute begin in May this year, the first acquisition of the company has ever made. In 2004, CA acquired PestPatrol PestPatrol and subsequently added to the eTrust.
Independent evaluations and tests have repeatedly shown that visual tools are not as good for spyware programs as dedicated anti-spyware stop. While AV tools can detect 99% of the viruses of this issue is perhaps significant 70% – during the examination of spyware programs.
Use the following versions of desktop tools to protect your AV equipment from "spyware" is very attractive for companies. No need to deploy another software agent on each machine in the office population, it is not necessary to follow other 'console'. AV management and includes features that businesses need – such as "operation Headless and centralized management. Companies to achieve greater consistency of standards in a smaller number of suppliers, ultimately leading to its profitability.
Dedicated Anti-Spyware
There is a growing list of specialized programs available anti-spyware vendors, including Webroot (which only got $ 108million in capital funding for companies), Lavasoft and PC Tools. Lavasoft Ad-Aware is the most popular with about 128 million downloads to date. Other important products are Spybot Search and Destroy, CounterSpy and spyware remover. Microsoft has also entered the market with Windows Antispyware – beta version available for download on your page Web – as a result of its acquisition Giant Company Software.
This anti-spyware programs running are more effective today to detect and remove spyware that AV products will change in the coming quarters. Most dedicated anti-spyware features are available for free download for consumers / users individuals rather than corporations. The site license is rarely available, for example. Some of the emerging suppliers, including software and BAF Tenebril have business deals on their work plans. However, these companies are small, lack of activity or stability of financial reporting in certain cases, and usually are not compatible the equipment and infrastructure to manage business customers.
Orthus believe many dedicated anti-spyware programs will cease to exist independently in the future relatively close and dedicated anti-spyware market will not be significant in the coming years as established vendors offer integrated AV / antispyware / firewall personal hygiene.
Personal Firewalls
Like the AV tools now include "spyware" to provide protection to both server level personal security and protection available. These include McAfee, Check Point (after the acquisition of Zone Labs in early 2004 and the subsequent release of product integrity) and Internet Security Systems (ISS) with the release of Proventia Desktop March 2005. Sygate follows a path similar to Check Point and ISS.
The Personal firewalls are especially recommended for mobile clients that are regularly taken outside the perimeter of the company and is used for access to enterprise systems DSL connections at home and public WiFi points, whose direct access to the Internet usually is also allowed. Also recommended for desktops and mobile customers in small towns where there is little or no protection from the gateway in place, and again direct Internet access is available at these sites.
Gateway Protection
Desktop protection is only half the story when it comes to spyware protection. protection at the gateway is also available.
Blue Coat offers a range of proxy servers, which together with the popular address filtering solutions, offers a good protection against spyware. Spyware often secretly installs via "drive-by" installers, which install "spyware" in the background without any user interaction. Blue Coat combats with the controls of this anti-spyware to inspect, filter and block Web content associated with spyware software installed. " This preventive approach is essential when "Spyware" is an unknown website – Not classified as URL filtering solutions – And when there is no known signature available to detect malware.
Gateway integrating the protection URL filtering solution is particularly good in high-prevention programs in systems infected to send information to spyware sites, to mitigate impact on the productivity of adware, but also privacy and concern about serious data breaches associated with malicious code. URL filtering solutions also offer some protection against infection, especially by preventing users visit sites known infected.
gateway solutions often include recording and reporting capabilities that can be used to identify infected systems and a goal to facilitate periodic cleaning spyware. This feature is also useful for capturing mobile clients (laptops) that are not protected by personal firewall, which then become infected outside the enterprise perimeter.
Recommendations
In the light of earlier Orthus shows that companies follow the approach of mitigating the risks posed by the "spies" for today:
- Gateway to implement protection Anti-spyware to prevent communication background augemented systems infected with a leading solution in URL filtering.
- Operate granular information from gateway solutions to identify infected systems and select a dedicated anti-spyware tool to clean infected systems, case by-case ad hoc.
- up not to deploy anti-spyware programs in the Town Office – Instead of waiting for AV vendors to add strong capabilities anti-spyware in future versions.
- existing systems branch of Internet-based remote access through the front door of companies (the gateway where there is anti-spyware).
- for remote and mobile clients, in addition to AV, install a personal firewall that is known to increase protection.
educate their staff in an awareness of the risks of spyware, how systems are usually infected and how to close the pop
