Buy a new computer: What features should be considered for future test of my new team, as far as possible?

I Internet use, DVD, music and word processing in general. I really do not any game or video editing. Connects to TV, set up a home network and a media center in the future. Technology has changed a lot since I bought my pc final and lost to all the new terms. Please help Thanks for all the answers so far. The risk of sounding completely stupid, what PC comes with Linux already installed. Is there an alternative to windows.
