technology doubles every

It seems to me that the difference between old cpu’s and new ones isn’t that large is that true or not?
I heard that computer technology rapidly expands every year, even half year parts become almost obsolete.
But I’m running this 6 or 7 year old CPU, an AMD athlon XP 2100+
and it’s been running at about 1300 mhz this whole time, I just overclocked it to 1800 yesterday.
I’m going to get a new CPU for X-mas, but what I was looking at is the new intel i7 920 – and it claims to run at 2.6…
I’m obviously not very educated on the subject, but in 6 years am I supposed to believe we’ve only doubled my cpu speed from 1.3 to 2.6?
So like, it doesn’t get bottlenecked but ultimately it’s still at a base speed twice as fast if you don’t count that?
All quad core does is stop bottlenecking?
I don’t know what “eliminates the fsb” means:(
Speed is only one factor in what makes CPUs more powerful.
It’s really a matter of “how much data” they process in a single clock cycle.
Modern CPUs may run at the same speed as (or a little faster) than those years older, however, thanks to larger onboard cache & more efficient internal register architecture they outperform yesterday’s processors by light years,
Add to this multiple cores on one chip, & it’s no contest.
What CPUs do is move data.
It’s like comparing a dump truck to a pickup truck. If both are running at the same speed which one do you think will move more stuff more quickly ? You see … internal clock speed isn’t everything.
