Norfolk State University is a diverse school?

I am looking for a university in the region of Norfolk, with a good program Biology, Microbiology preferable, or even better, but medical technology. Medtech NSU, but a friend of my husband told me he would not, because it is a predominantly African-American university. He even said he was going to be the minority, and receives some form of financial assistance why. I wonder if anyone knows if there is a relatively diverse student population. On the other hand, no one knows about their academics, in particular the medical technology program?
