Medical LIBRARY FORM National
The National Library of Medicine (NLM) in Bethesda, Maryland, is a part of the National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Since its founding in 1836, the NLM has played a central role in the translation of biomedical research in practice. It is the most world's largest biomedical library and the development of electronic information services that offer thousands of billions of bytes of data from millions of users all day. Scientists, health professionals and the general public in the United States and around the world looking for online information resource library more than one billion times each year.
The library is open to everyone and provides many services and resources – for scientists, professionals health, historians and the general public. NLM has about 12 million books, magazines, manuscripts, videos and other forms of health information on the shelves, making it the largest library of health sciences in the world. In today's world increasingly digital NLM carries out its mission to help biomedical research support to health care and public health, and promote healthy behaviors:
* Acquire, organize, preserve and academic literature Biomedical
* Facilitate access to biomedical and health information throughout the country in association with 5,600 members of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN / LM ®);
* To serve as a leading resource for building, curating and providing access to sophisticated molecular biology and information genomics, including the Human Genome Project and the NIH roadmap;
* Create high-quality information services in toxicology and environmental health, health services and public health;
systems * Conduct research and development of biomedical communications, methods, technologies, networks and information dissemination and use among health professionals, patients and the general public;
* The funds for advanced research computing Biomedical, which serves as a pillar of the previous training and postdoctoral research in biomedical informatics at the American University 18. Scientific Information Services: The most watched online resources worldwide by medical scientists is MEDLINE ® / PubMed ®, a database accessible to the public more 18 million citations from 1948 and Journal today. Another important part of the holdings of the line is wide NLM PubMed Central ® (PMC), a Web-based repository of biomedical literature reviews provide free access to over 1.5 million full-text articles. The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) distributes GenBank ®, a collection of all DNA sequences that are known, and also allows access to the assembled human genome data. NCBI also a role leadership in the study of major new genome-wide association (GWAS) of the project, an NIH-wide initiative to understand the genetic factors underlying the human diseases.
In 2007, NCBI expanded considerably the scope of public resources through the development of the database of Genotypes and Phenotypes (dbGaP). These and other resources are available at NCBI http://www.ncbi.nih.gov. It has been 14 years since the data sets Visible Human Project ® male and female were placed released by the NLM Lister Hill Center. Data sets (about 50 gigabytes in total) are applied in a wide range of projects for about 2,500 dealers in 49 countries. The Division Specialized Information Services (SIS) offers a wide range of resources related to environmental health and toxicology
. Among the best known is TOXNET ®, a collection of databases on hazardous chemicals, toxic emissions and environmental health. SIS also collects information on HIV / AIDS, disaster preparedness and other topics. Information services to the public: The library has extensive information resources to serve the general public.
main entrance to the library for information on the health of consumers is MedlinePlus ®, available in English and Spanish (MedlinePlus Spanish). MedlinePlus has extensive, updated and easy to read information on nearly 800 health topics. It also offers interactive health tutorials and a collection Video of surgery. MedlinePlus has information on thousands of prescription and nonprescription medications and alternative treatments such as herbal remedies. And provide the public with new health care more that can be used, NLM staff oversees the production of free, quarterly magazine and NIH MedlinePlus his Spanish counterpart, NIH MedlinePlus Health. ClinicalTrials.gov provides the public with full information on all types of clinical research.
The site has over 71,000 records protocol sponsored by the U.S. government, the pharmaceutical industry, academia and international organizations, in 50 states and 165 countries. Genetics Home Reference is the NLM's Web site for information on health benefits for consumers on genetic conditions. This source of information for consumers of health information and scientific data bridges, bioinformatics, and links to many resources, both NLM and other reputable sites. Another source of information for the public is NIHSeniorHealth.gov, which is maintained by the Library in collaboration with the National Institute of Adult Aging and other institutes of NIH.
The site contains information on topics of interest to seniors, with special features such as enlarged and "talk" function that allows users to hear the text read to them. NLM public information, also, toxicology, environmental health, and HIV / AIDS. The database Household Products provides easy to understand the data in the consumer-friendly language on the potential health effects of more than 2,000 ingredients contained more than 7,000 common household products. Tox Town ® points many harmful substances and environmental hazards, not just in one city, but in a port, a large city a farm, and the area-Mexico border.
The Division has also created a series of portals aimed at specific populations including Native Americans, Asian Americans, and those living in the Arctic. ToxMystery, an interactive website for kids 7-10, teaches users about the risks chemical potential in a house. There is also a Spanish version (click on "Spanish interface) This animation. National Medical Library Network: NLM partner key to making the information available is the National Network of Libraries of Medicine. The network consists of 5,600 members, institutions, including eight regional libraries NLM receiving medical support, 125 libraries of resources related to medical schools, and over 5,000 libraries located primarily in hospitals and clinics.
Grant Programs: Extramural Programs Division provides grants to support research in medical informatics, biotechnology health sciences and information Information and research training in these areas. planning the network and computer support development of scholarship and communication systems in schools health and exploring new opportunities for broadband networks in the health sciences. Grants Health Library resources to help improve access to information and services for health professionals. Research and publications in the history of medicine and science life are also supported. annual statistical profile of the NLM (September 30, 2008)
